Newfoundland
and Labrador
is a Canadian province
located on the east coast of North America. It consists of Labrador,
which is situated on the mainland of the continent and the island of
Newfoundland. Newfoundland became a British colony in 1583 when it was
annexed by Sir Humphrey Gilbert (see Scott numbers 212-225). It
achieved self-governing status as a
Dominion in 1907.
In 1927, the British government ruled on a dispute between Quebec and
Newfoundland, deciding Labrador would be considered part of the
Dominion of Newfoundland. In 1933, because of high debt from World War
I and the construction of a railway across the island, the Newfoundland
legislature voted itself out of existence. A commission of seven
members appointed by the British government ran the colony with no
elected representation for 15 years. On April 1, 1949, Newfoundland
joined Canada following two referenda on the colony's future, at which
point it became a dead
country no longer issuing its own stamps.
During
part of its time as a colony and Dominion, between January 1, 1857 and
June 24, 1947, about 300 stamps were issued by the Newfoundland Post
Office.
The stamps are widely acclaimed for the design and their presentation
of the country's history and geography. Although there are some
rarities, the majority of these issues are modestly priced and a fairly
complete collection is possible for most
collectors.
I
specialize in Newfoundland postage stamps for beginning to
intermediate
collectors, although there are often items of interest to those more
advanced.
I
carry mint and used stamps and some postal history. Please ask
if don't see the item you need in my store.
I have an online store on eBay.
I also welcome your
Newfoundland stamp want lists and can often provide items not listed in
my store. Let me help you build your
Newfoundland stamp collection.
